Why Follow God in College?

Why follow God in college? The transition from high school to college can decide who you are, who you will become, and who you will follow. You must decide now, before you enter college, if you’re going to follow God in college.

With the start of the new semester, many women will leave home and move to a new place to begin their college years. I’m so excited for you all to begin this new journey! When you go to college, big parts of your life will change. You’ll experience more freedom than you had while living at home. With this freedom, you may be challenged in your faith. (more…)

8 Ways to Live Set Apart in College

Christian in College

In case you missed my interview last night with She Is Set Apart ministries, check out the YouTube video below. Tierraney Richardson, from She is Set Apart Ministries, and I discuss how to live set apart in college.

Transitioning from high school to college is a major change. New place to live, new friends, new classes, independence, and freedom. You have the freedom to do anything and be anyone you want. This freedom can lead to brokenness if you choose to follow the world instead of God. I hope to encourage you to live set apart in college.

You have a choice – will you follow Jesus in college and live set apart or will you follow the world?
Will you turn to Jesus to find acceptance or will you turn to peers?
Will you put Jesus first or will the busyness of classes and your desire for success take over your life?

Will you live set apart?

She Is Set Apart ministry’s founder, Tierraney Richardson, actually guest posted on the blog last summer! Here is her post if you would like to read more about her story and singleness: She Is Set Apart by Tierraney Richardson.

30 Life Lessons I Learned in College

College Life Lessons

Today I will graduate with a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida. Walking across the stage, I will be wearing medals, cords, and a sash representing my awards and accomplishments. You could say I learned a lot in college, but the awards I recieved and the academic knowledge I learned is not what stands out the most. Yes, I’m thankful for the academic knowledge I have learned, but I am even more thankful for the 30 life lessons that God has taught me throughout my college experience.

Here are 30 life lessons that I learned during my 3.5 years in college: (more…)

5 Reasons to Love Planners + Planner Giveaway

2015 Planner Hey friends! With the new year approaching, I wanted to give away 2 free planners! Using a planner helps me stay organized and helps me accomplish my To-Do list! I wanted to share 5 ways a planner can enhance your day to day life and ministry. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway to win a beautiful FREE 2015 planners! (Two winners will be chosen.)

  1. Prioritize. Planning out your days will help you realize how you prioritize your activities. After you finish a day, look back and see what you spent the most time doing. Did you spend time with God? For some people (myself included), it is important to plan quiet times into their days or else God is easily forgotten. This helps make God a priority.
  2. Efficiency. Planners help you use time more efficiently. Use your planner to set aside specific time to blog, meet with women, prepare for Bible study, etc. As a college student, you have a lot to juggle. That could include school, sports, clubs, and ministry. When you map out your days, you can see how you are using your time. Are you spending multiple hours each day watching Netflix or are you using the time that God has given you as a gift?
  3. Remember. Planners help you remember all the important dates in your life. You will never miss appointments, birthdays, or when your bills are due. I also use my planner to write all my school assignments out each semester.
  4. Plan. Use your planner to look into the future and set short and long term goals. Where do you want to be at the end of the month spiritually, physically, and emotionally? What about at the end of the year?
  5. Accomplish. One of my favorite things is to cross something off my list. I get so much pleasure and accomplishment when I get to use a sharpie to cross off something I finished. If you happen to not finish everything that day, don’t beat yourself up. Stay positive and focus on what you finished. You always have tomorrow!

Using a planner will help you accomplish more and lower your stress. I wish I could give you all a planner, because I love them that much. Good luck and hope you win!

Will my classmates ever know Jesus?

College Students and Faith. JoyPedrow.com

I walk out of class in a daze. So much sadness. So much pain. Jesus, will these people ever come to know you? Will they ever experience your life change? When will they experience your healing, forgiveness, redemption, grace and love?

This is my last semester of undergrad at the University of South Florida. I’m taking a class called Storytelling, and each week we share personal stories from our lives. During class last week, students shared one sad story after the next. Topics included: abortion, death, getting kicked out of the church, loss of friends, moving, getting arrested, abuse, and more. I was left questioning, God, when will you change their hearts?

In class, I looked around at my classmates and thought how beautiful each person was because God created them in his image. God, shouldn’t that mean you care about them? Yet, they don’t know you at all. Do they want to know you? Do they even have the information that you exist to be able to make this decision?

So many thoughts. So many questions.

Then, I think about how God saved me. What makes me different? Why did God choose me? I’m just like them. I have similar stories of pain and brokenness. I have screwed up just like them. What makes me different than them? (more…)

5 Ways to Love Your non-Christian Roommate

Ways to Love Your Non-Christian Roommate

Dear Roommate,
When paired with a random roommate in college, learning to live together can be challenging. It can be even more challenging if you both have different beliefs and lifestyles. If this happens and she is not a follower of Christ, here are 5 ways to help show her the love of Jesus in a kind, non-threatening way.

  1. Include. Invite her into your group of friends. If you’re planning a dinner out, ask if she wants to come. If you’re going to a game night, invite her! Invite her to church, college ministry events and meetings, and even just to hang out on campus! When she feels included and begins to make friends with other believers, the more she will get to experience Jesus’ love.
  2. Help. Go out of your way to do her chores, vacuum her side of the room, clean the bathroom, or take out the trash. Most people are not fans of chores, so she’ll probably be surprised and thankful for the help. She may even ask why you’re helping her. Perfect opportunity to share the gospel.
  3. Pray. Be intentional about praying for her. Pray that she would come to know Jesus. Pray that Jesus’ love would shine through you. You can even ask her if there is anything she needs prayer for. This shows you really do care.
  4. Listen. In college not everyone has someone close by to listen to their problems, especially freshman. When she seems upset, ask her what is wrong and then take the time to listen. Don’t feel the need to spill out Bible verses, just sit and listen. If she asks you for help, then offer loving advice.
  5. Be authentic. Be yourself. Don’t change who you are out of fear that she won’t like you. For example, do not avoid reading your Bible because you think she might find it weird. Maybe she will see you reading it and ask you why. Being authentic with her can create many opportunities to share the gospel!

Remember that Jesus loves her just as much as you. She is also the daughter of a King, she just may not know that yet. You two were paired up for a reason, and maybe that reason is so she can come to know Jesus.

Love, Christian College Gal
