“Our hearts often detect the lies long before our minds begin to process them.”
We fail to realize that we are believing lies until they effect us. How scary is that. The enemy wants us to believe lies because he wants to ruin our relationship with God. The good news is that lies have no power over us. In this 3 part series, I will unpack what scripture tells us about believing lies. By looking to scripture, we can define lies, discover where they come from, and learn how to break free from their grips. As a resource, here is a step by step guide on a craft idea for a women’s ministry night: Women’s Ministry Craft Night: Shattering the Lies We Believe. Feel free to combine this series with the activity for an empowering women’s night!
What are lies?
Lies are a false statement with deliberate intent to deceive. A lie is an imposter of the truth.
Here are some common lies women believe:
- God is not enough
- God should fix my problems
- I have to perform to be loved and accepted
- I need a boyfriend
- It is okay to date a non-Christian
- I can’t overcome my sin
- I’m not valuable
- God has forgotten about me
- Sex outside of marriage is okay
- My past can’t be forgiven
- I’m not beautiful
- Getting married will solve all my problems.
I have believed so many lies. These lies have resulted in feelings of guilt, shame, and bondage. I want you all to experience freedom from lies and not live in bondage. The root problems in my life have grown out of believing lies. This is why it is so important to discover what lies you believe. I believed: “I’m not beautiful”, “God is not powerful enough”, and “God is not satisfying enough.”
Try to think back to the earliest memory you have of believing these lies. The earliest I can remember believing these lies is 5th grade. The “cute” boys didn’t like me, but they liked the other girls, so I believed, “I must not be beautiful.” That was how I rationed my thoughts. Then in high school, I was told I needed to work out more. This continued the lie I believed since I was young, “I’m not beautiful.”
This lie resulted in believing another lie, “I have to perform to be loved.” I longed to lose weight so I could gain approval. I also thought losing weight would get me a boyfriend. This led to another lie, “I need a guy to make me feel beautiful.”
Do you see how believing one lie can result in believing multiple? That is why it is so important to find the root lies.
None of these things filled the void in my heart to feel beautiful and loved. I learned this the hard and painful way, but I also got to experience the redemption of Jesus. Jesus took my broken lie believing self and made me realize that only he can heal me and love me the way I want to be loved. God loves us so much. We are his precious daughters. He doesn’t want us to turn to other things to fill our void. He wants us to turn to him.
I’m sick of giving lies power.
In the book of Ruth, a women named Naomi’s husband died. She believed God’s love for her was defined by her circumstances. When she lost her husband, she said, “the Lord’s hand has turned against me.” Then Naomi changed her name to Mara because she said, “the Lord has made me very bitter. I went away full but the Lord has brought me back empty. The Lord has afflicted me and brought misfortune on me.”
Naomi believed a lot of lies. Here are a few: “God only loves me in good times”, “God turned his back on my”, and “God is punishing me.”
Think about this question. Do you believe the lie that God’s love for you is dependent on your circumstances? Do you believe like Naomi that God does not love you in hard times? The answer to this question could help you discover your root lies.
